In Prepartations to Thanksgiving we have much to be thankful for at Barton Creek. Many of our residents have participated in fun Thanksgiving festivities over the last few weeks, making Thanksgiving decorations and playing Thanksgiving Jingo.

As we asked some of our residents and staff to share some of the things they are thankful for this is what they said:
Friends, Eyes to see, Someone to love, Children that love you, Family, Education, Work, God, Awesome Staff, and Good Health.

We are SO VERY THANKFUL for each and everyone of our residents, families and staff. We could not do what we do without each of them. Happy Thanksgiving to all with thankful hearts.

It's a SLIMY day at Barton Creek!

Watch out, it's SLIME TIME! Today the residents learned how to make "slime"- a thick, sticky, slippery substance. At first they didn't even know what to think of such a thing, but as soon as they felt it "oohs" and "aahs" echoed from the cafe.

Honoring our Veterans at Barton Creek

On November 11, 2010 - at Barton Creek, we had the privledge to honor our veterans. We had a display table, that the residents could display uniforms, medals, stories, pictures etc. We had a lot of items that were displayed for all to see. There was a lot of history displayed on the tables, we want to thank all those that shared with us,

a little piece of their history.

We had the American Legion come and dedicate a flag for our new flag pole out front. This was a suggestion made by one of our residents,

to have a flag.

Western Theme and Chili Cook Off - OCT 7, 2010

A great time was had by all at Barton Creek on October 7, 2010 for our Western / Chili Cook Off themed day. We had great western entertainment, a chili cook off with a western lunch of BBQ ribs, Roasted Chicken, potatoe salad, corn bread and apple pie alamode. It was a beautiful sunny day for a horse drawn wagon ride. A good time was had by all, what a great day for our Barton Creek Residents.

A big thank you to all the family and friends of our residents who came out and supported our Annual Community Breakfast. We had a great turn out, around 250 members of our community came and enjoyed some home cooked pancakes and eggs. We also had plenty of orange rolls, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, and juice. We had our Home Health and Hospice Team on hand to visit and introduce our Membership Program which is free to all seniors 65 and older. We also had a drawing for a free basket of fresh bread and Jams from Harvest Bakery. We look forward to doing it again next year!!

It's that time of year again! We will be offering the Flu Vaccination to our Residents in October. The schedule is as follows:

October 6, 2009 from 10:30-11:45 a.m.

October 22, 2009 from 10:30-11:45 a.m.

There will be a sign up available at the front desk beginning on September 29, 2009. If you are interested in getting immunized please make sure you sign up.

Barton Creek Gives Great Care

Editor:

It is my desire to let everyone know about a wonderful Assisted Living Center that is right here in Bountiful. Barton Creek was the center I chose to place my mom who could no longer live alone. It was a delightful decision. Not only did they take care of my mom and meet all of her needs and wishes, but the staff and residents became part of my life, my family.

I cannot describe the peace and confidence I felt knowing she was there and she was loved by those attending to her. It is my wish to personally thank all of the staff and residents for their love, friendship, and care.

Please know that you CAN place a loved one in Barton Creek and have full confidence that they will be cared for as you would care for them.

On July 31st the residents at Barton Creek loaded up and headed out for the journey to Mill Creek Canyon for the day. Sunshine and mountains, not to mention good company and laughter surrounded us as we had our summer picnic. Pizza, breadsticks, garden salad, grapes and an ice cream bar were on the menu for lunch. We had such a good time that the residents didn’t even want to leave! What a great day it ended up being. We are looking forward to our next summer picnic at Liberty Park August 27th.

Many remember the days when telegrams were commonly used to communicate long distances. David A. Bland has joined South Davis Community Hospital (SDCH) as Chief Executive Officer of the organization’s campus of health care services.

Mr. Bland has nearly 17 years of management experience in the health care industry. Having worked for SDCH for five years in the past, he is “returning home” after ten years of great success as a facility administrator at local care centers in the Bountiful and Salt Lake areas.

For over 32 years South Davis Community Hospital has been devoted to innovative specialty health care programs, serving residents throughout Davis County, the state of Utah and neighboring intermountain states. Barton Creek Beauty Salon

Many Residents at Barton Creek take advantage of our full-service Beauty Salon and Barber Shop. Operated by independent business owner, Karla Becker, customers can choose from a wide variety of services from shampoo & sets, to cuts, curls and perms. The chatter of visiting voices and the occasional bit of gossip can be heard down the hallway.

Karla's hours are:

Monday - 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Thursday - 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Friday - 8:30 am to 3:00 pm
Saturday - 8:30 am to 11:00 am

Payment can be made in person, or the salon will happily bill the responsible party for services rendered. Because the salon is independently run, Barton Creek does not bill. Cost for services is listed below:

Shampoo & Set - $13.00
Woman's Haircut - $13.00
Man's Haircut - $10.00
Perm (includes cut and set) - $45.00 to $55.00
Tints (includes set) - $30.00
Up Do - $15.00

Occasionally residents have family members or friends style their hair. Residents are welcome to use the Salon outside of operating hours. The facility is equipped with 4 hair dryers, two of which are portable, 2 hydraulic chairs and 2 sinks.

4th of July Fireworks and Festivities

The holiday weekend was a blast at Barton Creek. Celebration began Thursday afternoon in cooking club during which we decorated an American Flag cake and enjoyed red, white and blue sodas. If you think the pictures look good you should have been here to taste the finished product!

Usually our bedtime is around nine o'clock, but on the 4th of July it's okay to stay up late to watch fireworks. Last Friday we piled up the buses with 22 of our residents and drove up to Eaglewood to celebrate our Independence. It was nearly midnight by the time we rolled back into the driveway. It was well worth it and we look forward to July 22nd when we will be hosting our own firework show!

Watermelon Bust

Can you guess how much this watermelon weighs? If you guessed 87 lbs you would be wrong, but if you guessed 16.49 lbs you would be exactly right! Last Friday afternoon was a blast as residents soaked up the sun, enjoyed each others company and gobbled up all the fresh watermelon they could eat.

Luckily the rain subsided long enough for us to pile on to the patio and enjoy the beautiful flowers and warm weather. The new gazebo furniture has withstood the elements quite well and plays even better. In all, over half of our residents made it outside to participate. Our new activities director Tauna is a master at getting people excited for activities and getting them to participate.

Hail Storm at Barton Creek

When it rains it pours. And sometimes it hails. Well, it rained and hailed and put on a show on campus at Barton Creek last Tuesday. The hail coming off the steep roof piled up under the rain gutters and blanketed the ground with a layer of frozen rain that looked like fallen snow.

It's days like this that we are glad to have a nice place to watch the storm through the windows and the skylights of our comfortable rooms.

This sight has become all too familiar along the Wasatch front this spring. We hope it slows down for all the summer activities we have planned in July including fireworks, farmer's markets, and picnics. The July calendar will be posted shortly. Check out the Calendar tab to get specifics.

On Saturday, June 6th our residents had a Special Hawaiian Luau. The Ahuna family, having traveled all over the mid-west, made their last stop here at Barton Creek and put on a magnificent performance.

The Luau started off with a specially prepared lunch of Pani Po-Po rolls, grilled teriyaki chicken, kahlua pork, green beans with shredded coconut, Waikiki style macaroni salad, and tropical fruit salad topped off with pineapple upside-down cake.

Residents were covered in bright, colorful leis, staff dressed festively with leis, and grass skirts and were even called up front to learn a hula dance! The Ahuna family brought their music and dancing with passion here that day and our residents and their families had a spectacular time filled with laughter and amazement.

We took as many pictures as the digital memory card would allow. Nearly everyone attended so your mom or dad is sure to be in the crowd!

We are very excited to announce our Luau entertainment for this coming Saturday. The Ahuna family, children of our very own resident Ruth J., will be performing a variety of cultural song and dance from Hawaii, New Zealand, Tahiti, and Samoa. Some may remember the last time they shared their talent with Barton Creek. Residents and staff rave about the event to this day.

The performance will take place on Saturday, June 6th from 12:30 to 1:30. Seating limited so arrive early. Residents will be treated to a Luau lunch immediately preceeding the show. Guests are welcome to come early for lunch but we request that you please RSVP at least 24 hours in advance to guarantee a plate.

Farewell Michelle

On Thursday May 28th we bid farewell to our activities director, Michelle. She has decided to stay at home with her baby girl. After 5 years of outstanding employment Michelle will definitely be missed. Many of the residents joined the staff in wishing her their best. She always had a special knack for planning and carrying out fun, interesting activities for our residents. She had a special ability to form close relationships with our residents, likely because she was always so genuine and sincere. Thank you for all your hard work Michelle!

While we may be losing a great employee we are excited to introduce Tauna as the new activities director. Tauna is actually a returning employee who worked at Barton Creek as a C.N.A. about 5 years ago. With her excitement and experience we fully expect her to hit the ground running. She will be a valuable team member that will provide the residents with exceptional care and attention. Look for her to begin posting activity updates to the blog shortly. Welcome Tauna!

It seems like everyone has a cell phone and an email address these days. Well, everyone but your parents anyway. We are very excited to introduce a fun new way to keep in touch with your friends and family at Barton Creek electronically. Simply click the "Postcards" tab and you will be directed to a page with a brief form to fill out including a section to type a message to your friend or family member. These letters will be printed and hand delivered by Nick or Connie.

We have included a line to insert your email address so the residents can read you letter and write a response which will be typed and sent back to you. Our goal is to deliver each message received within 24 hours. We welcome feedback and encourage you to let us know how you like it and if you have any ideas for improvement.

Memorial Day is a time for picnics and BBQs and warm sunny weather. On Friday we loaded up a couple of buses with walkers, coolers, drinks and friends and headed up to Barnes Park in Kaysville for lunch and to feed the ducks. Beginning with potato salad and finishing with donuts from Dicks Bakery, everyone filled up so we decided to share our leftovers with the local bird population. The ducks and geese came right up to the fence and practically took the bread out of our hands!

We took lots of pictures and have uploaded them to the photo album as usual. There are some good close-ups, a few suprise shots and even a few wildlife pics.

Due to the close business relationship between administration at Barton Creek and SDCH, issues regarding care are quickly addressed and resolved.

Many residents have utilized these services during their stay at Barton Creek. Available Rooms

A number of apartments have become available in the past week or two of which we wanted to make families aware who may be considering moving mom or dad to a smaller room to cut costs or move from the second floor to the first floor. Whatever the reason, Barton Creek is happy to accommodate requests. There is no charge for a first-time move, however, the family is responsible to make arrangements with a moving company or with family to facilitate moving furniture and belongings.

Apartment 110 is located on the first floor in the west hallway. Click on the picture for an expanded view. This studio apartment's window points west and overlooks the creek and the city and lets in lots of light in the afternoon. This apartment costs $82.62 per day which is approximately $2,500 per month.
Apartment 234 is located on the 2nd floor in the east hallway. This studio apartments window faces west and overlooks the courtyard which is going to be a beautiful view after the memory gardens have been planted! This is the largest studio floor plan available at Barton Creek. It costs $84.62 per day which is about $2575 per month.

Mother's Day was an enjoyable day for the residents. In addition to enjoying gifts and visitors throughout the weekend, we had a little celebration Saturday afternoon in the atrium and set out fresh flowers in the dining room to honor all the wonderful mothers in our presence. We hope each of you had an enjoyable weekend as well.

We love visitors and welcome them on all occasions. It is our pleasure to provide meals to visitors and to show off our cooking skills. To keep food budgets within reason our kitchen staff tries to limit excess. When you plan to purchase guest meals at Barton Creek we request 24 hour notice including party size so we can make the appropriate accommodations.

Lastly, the Memory Gardening will begin tomorrow around noon and end sometime around five or six. Resident and family participation is encouraged!

Memory Garden Tribute

Losing a friend or loved one is a difficult part of life and is a challenge for residents at Barton Creek. It is important and comforting to remember special memories and relationships. Creating a memory garden is a unique way to feel closer to those that have passed away.

On Tuesday, May 12th we will be planting a memory garden in our round-about area as a tribute to all our friends and family that have lived at Barton Creek over the years. Residents, staff, and family members are invited to spend a moment to plant a flower and reflect on the lives of those that were special to them. Flowers of all kinds will be provided and made available throughout the day. Please join us for this special event.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

What do a pinata, a sombrero and a walker have in common? A Fiesta at Barton Creek! Residents celebrated Cinco de Mayo in fashion. Everyone had lots of fun taking swings at the seemingly indestructible pinata and doing the cha-cha during the "Mexican Hat Dance." As usual, we took a bunch of photos that are already posted in the photo gallery.

We use every opportunity to celebrate around here and actually have another party on Saturday at 2:15 to celebrate Mother's Day. We would love if you joined us! We are working on a way for family members that visit the blog to write messages to their loved ones that we can print and deliver. Hopefully we can have it finished in the next day or two so that Mother's Day messages can be delivered.

Comcast Installation

Well its finally time to install Comcast. On Wednesday May 6th, representatives from Comcast will be in the facility to begin the process of installing cable television throughout the building as well as answering questions from residents, teaching how to use the remote control, providing channel lists and discussing upgrade options. These reps will be here throughout the day tomorrow and likely part of the day Thursday.

Basically all the work of changing service will be completed by Comcast. For residents with current private accounts and residents without no further action is required. Naturally many people will have questions and we encourage you to speak with the reps tomorrow or leave your question here on the blog and we will ask your question for you and post it here.

We are so excited this is finally happening. Hopefully everything will go smoothly and by tomorrow night all our residents will be channel surfing!

Spring Fling

There's no time quite like Spring. From the colorful flowers in bloom to the melodies of songbirds everywhere seems to be bursting with new life. The only sensible way to celebrate is to dance! On Friday, May 1st we pushed the chairs and couches out of the way, invited the "Old Time Combo" to provide the music and the rest was history. Additional Swine Flu Updates

This letter is an official statement from South Davis Community Hospital regarding our current prevention measures for Swine Flu:

April 30, 2009

Dear Friends and Family Members,

As you are likely aware, cases of a novel strain of Swine-Origin Influenza A (H1N1) Virus, or S-OIV, have been reported in adults and children within the United States.
South Davis Community Hospital, in collaboration with State and Federal agencies, is closely monitoring the current situation and will provide you with updates as new information emerges.

It is important to follow recommendations that have been provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and to avoid unnecessary panic or worry. The WHO has currently advised focusing on increased surveillance, early detection, and early treatment.

While not everyone who presents with a respiratory illness will have swine influenza, it is important to note that current cases of swine influenza have an acute fever associated with at least two of the following symptoms:

Runny nose
Sore throat
Cough
Nasal congestion

If a resident presents with an acute fever and at least two respiratory symptoms, a surgical mask will be placed on the resident, if possible. The resident may be moved to a private room or cohorted with another resident who has influenza type illness. A viral culture should will also be ordered from the lab.

You can help mitigate the risk of spreading S-OIV and other infections by:

Frequently wash your hands (either with soap and water or an alcohol hand rub).
Follow respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette:
Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing – sneeze into your sleeve
Use tissues to contain respiratory secretions and dispose of them in the nearest waste receptacle after use
Perform hand washing with soap and water or an alcohol hand rub after having contact with respiratory secretions and contaminated objects or materials
Avoiding social contact, especially with those who may have been exposed to influenza or are symptomatic.

In order to promote the health of our residents and employees, SDCH has asked that family members, friends, and other visitors refrain from entering the building if they exhibit symptoms associated with influenza, including sudden onset of fever, sore throat and cough, nasal congestion, and runny nose, or have been exposed to someone with a confirmed case of S-OIV.

Please be advised that this information may change as we continue to learn more about this strain of influenza. SDCH has pandemic influenza plan and a functioning committee that meets regularly to discuss and implement the plan as circumstances require. In addition, many of our nursing managers have received training regarding pandemic influenza from FEMA. We will provide you with additional information as it becomes available. Travel Advisories:
At this time, the CDC recommends that U.S. travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico. The WHO is not advocating restricting travel.

Things You Can Do to Stay Healthy:
Community Activities:
• Be aware that community-level “social distancing” or “keeping our distance” from each other will lessen the spread of flu.
• When the disease enters a community, social distancing measures such as school closures, teleworking, etc. may be recommended as a means of limiting spread.

Personal Activities:
• Stay home from school, work, and other social gatherings when you are ill.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
• Consider developing a family emergency plan as a precaution. This should include storing extra food, medicines, facemasks, and other essential supplies.

Administration at Barton Creek is aware of the situation involving the swine flu epidemic and wants to assure you that as a facility, we are prepared to prevent and control the spread of infection in our building. Over the course of the past year we have received flu-specific training in which we have prepared a series of actions we intend to take as potential pandemics approach our vicinity. Some steps involve our staff and residents directly while others apply to families and friends. Currently we are requesting your compliance with the following procedure:

In order to protect the health and well-being of our residents, please do not enter the building if you or anyone in your household have the following symptoms:
Fever
Sore throat and cough
Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
Nasal Congestion
Muscle and joint aches
You may visit again if your symptoms are gone AND it has been at least 7 days since the onset of symptoms.

We wish to emphasize that while we do not specifically fear our facility is in immediate danger we do believe that preparedness and prevention is the very best approach to this situation. New Resident Social

On Thursday the 16th, staff and residents participated in a "New Resident Social." Each resident that has moved in since the beginning of the year was highlighted. Many long-time residents also took the opportunity to introduce themselves to all the new faces. Dick's Eclairs were served and everyone had a great time. The pictures have been posted in the gallery.

We finally have an update on Comcast! Residents that currently have private accounts with Comcast will have their accounts transferred into Barton Creek's main account. This change will have no current affect on these residents' cable. At a future time a Comcast rep will come and collect the boxes and remotes. Keep these or they will charge you! For the residents that do not have Comcast installed a serviceman will be out daily for the next couple weeks setting up rooms.

This change looks to be mostly unintrusive and hassle free. Return frequently in the next few days for more specific updates and instructions and for now there is nothing that needs to be done on your part.

We have a new club! South Davis Home Care Membership Program is a free service offered to seniors, those who are medically fragile, or their caregivers. When a new member enrolls they will receive a sign-on gift and a membership card with their name on it. Some of the benefits of the program include:
-Quarterly newsletters -These contain short informative articles, member spotlights, and a "for fun" page. In the future we hope to include coupons to pharmacies or places of interest for seniors.
-Invitations to health fairs, support groups, and special presentations
-Vaccinations (influenza and pneumonia) – Cost covered by Medicare. For members without Medicare a fee will be charged for the cost of the serum.

Letter from former Family Member

Some of the benefits available to employees at Barton Creek are the relationships we form with our amazing residents. The people that you know and love and call family quickly win our hearts and we begin to understand why you care about them so deeply. Certainly, when a resident is called home we mourn their passing and cherish the time with which we were so blessed to be a part of their lives. Another great pleasure is to get to know the families of our residents. We rely on you and hope you feel that you can rely on us where ever and when ever.

The following letter was received from the son of a former resident, June S. June was a delightful person that brightened our building with her smile and infectious personality. She was well liked by everyone that came in contact with her. We wish to express our gratitude to John as well as to the families of each of our residents, past and present, for all they do for their loved ones and for us. Your service will not soon be forgotten.

Dear Connie:

I am writing to you to tell you how grateful my family and I are for Barton Creek.

As you know, my Mother moved in to Barton Creek in March of 2007 and lived there until her passing in April of 2008. We researched every assisted living facility in south Davis County and visited most before settling on Barton Creek and we are so very glad that we chose your facility. As we reminisce about Mother now while approaching the one year anniversary of her passing we recall how happy she was at Barton Creek and how happy we were having her there. I thought I might take a few moments and tell you specifically why.

Staff – We loved the way the staff related to Mother. I never had the impression that any staff member was there simply doing a job. It always appeared to me that each and every staff member cared for Mother and genuinely liked her. This includes the aids, nursing staff, and management of course. But also everyone else: cleaning staff; kitchen; maintenance, etc. Moving Mother from our home to assisted living was a gut wrenching decision. Once she was at Barton Creek and we saw the level of care and caring, we never once were the least bit concerned that Mother was being taken care of in a professional and loving way.

The Facility – As you know, Mother loved the lobby area. The comfortable seating, skylights, being in the hub of activity, the song birds. I was lucky to be able visit nearly every day and most times I would arrive to find Mother in the main lobby just as comfortable as can be. The lobby area also provides comfort to visitors making it easy for us to come and go, enjoy a treat from the snack bar and take in the entertainment or activities taking place at the time. It is very much the comfortable living room for residents and guests alike. My wife (we are both 50 years old) wanted to move in she so much like the property.

Activities – There is plenty to do at Barton Creek. My Mother, with her advancing dementia, favored the music programs and was able to take advantage of several of the outings. There is something for everyone.

Levels of Care – Our Mother was on the high end of care level with her advancing dementia. You have many residents that need Mother’s level of care, less care or very little care. I was always impressed by how well the residents of all levels of ability were cared for and how they mixed together. As you know, I made several friends there among the other residents and I really enjoyed the sense of community among all the residents.

Food – To my wife and others I often times referred to Barton Creek as the best restaurant in town. We dined there several times with Mother as did other family members and friends of ours. The food is always good, the residents have choice on what to order, the dining room staff is very attentive and helpful. They get an A+++. We were very concerned about Mother’s weight when she first moved to Barton Creek as she was wasting away and under 90 pounds. In the six months prior to her moving in we tried very hard to put weight on her with no success. In six months at Barton Creek Mother gained 23 pounds! We were overjoyed.

As I mentioned, the decision to move Mother into assisted living was a difficult one. We were so concerned that no place would provide her the love and care we wanted her to have and tried to provide ourselves at home. My wife, my sister and I can tell you or anyone, without reservation, that Barton Creek provided the perfect home for Mother and that her care and her well being exceeded all our expectations and what we ever could have done for her ourselves at home. We are all so very happy that Mother’s last year of life was so very pleasant and we are very grateful to you and all of your staff for making it so. Please share our feelings with your staff.

I can, without reservation, recommend Barton Creek to anyone looking for a loving and caring home for an elderly loved one and would be very happy to talk with any family member contemplating such a move.

West Africa Humanitarians Come to Barton Creek!

Bell Choir Performance a Hit

On Monday April 6th the Barton Creek Bell Choir, consisting of residents at Barton Creek, performed a variety of springtime songs to the delight of all by playing such favorites as "Danny Boy" and "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain." The choir assembled in the atrium and residents and staff circled their chairs to get a good view. The sun and warmth coming in from the skylights combined with the catchy tunes gave everyone a touch of spring fever.

The Bell Choir meets every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. All residents are welcome to come to practice and to participate in performances. Typically between 12 and 18 people come play. Now is the perfect time for interested residents to join since they will be starting practice for their summer concert.

Throughout the previous year many residents have helped quilt several blankets. These blankets have been raffled and the funds collected are being saved to purchase a new set of bells for the choir. These aren't just any bells mind you... We're going to purchase the Cadillac of choir bells, and we're just one or two blankets away from our goal!

Last weekend a letter was mailed to responsible parties which included a Photo Release Form. These forms need to be signed before we can post the rest of the pictures we took at the performance on Monday. Of course these are not required by the facility but we hope to take plenty of pictures of all our residents so everyone can take part in the fun. If you did not receive a copy of this form you can pick one up at the front desk.

We took far more pictures on Monday that we had room to post, so we are also building a little photo gallery which can be viewed here. As more releases come in, more pictures will be added. We like this photo gallery because family members can download and print pictures of their loved ones! Notice in the column to the right that this address is posted for easy access.

Farewell Troy

Regretfully we bid farewell to our maintenance man, Troy. While he will be missed we can't blame him for accepting a job closer to home! Troy has been keeping Barton Creek running for the last six months. He has been an excellent employee and well liked by residents and staff. You may have noticed his work in the building or on our snow-free sidewalks throughout the winter.

We have posted the position in the local paper and hope to have it filled promptly, so if any of you happen to be handy and are looking for work give us a call and we'll help you apply.

Barton Creek Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Plan in Action

The Inn on Barton Creek, part of South Davis Community Hospital Campus (SDCH), which includes Orchard Cove, and South Davis Home Health/Hospice, wish to update residents and families on our efforts for an effective Emergency and Disaster Plan.

Barton Creek is aware and concerned about the safety of our residents. To better be prepared and educated we have and are participating in the following actions:

1. SDCH management staff recently completed Healthcare Disaster and Pandemic Influenza training at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), located in Anniston, Alabama. The CDP is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally-chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training facility in the nation.

2. SDCH has a functional Disaster Committee that meets monthly to develop new policies and procedures, implementation and training for all of our staff in Disaster and Emergency plans.

3. SDCH has and does meet all requirements for fire drills and water quality inspections.

4. SDCH staff has been trained for the evacuation of disabled residents.

5. SDCH has purchased special equipment for the proper evacuation of disabled residents for each of our facilities.

6. SDCH is partnering with Lakeview Hospital for Disaster Drills.

7. Monthly tips and information is distributed to all staff members on personal and home emergency preparedness.

We have had many request to provide 72 hour kits to our residents. We have found a company that will be coming to the Resident Council Meeting, March 30 at 1:00 to give a 10 minute presentation for personal 72 hour kits that can be purchased. The cost for the kits will be between $25-$35. We will provide a sign-up sheet at the front desk. Purchase of the kits are optional, but recommended.

The management at Barton Creek is committed to the safety and well being of each of our residents. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts. Welcome friends and family to the Inn on Barton Creek Assisted Living! It is our pleasure to introduce you to our new blog. Our purpose for this blog is to link our residents families and friends, near and far, with their loved ones here at Barton Creek.

Expect to see news, pictures, achievements and stories from our everyday adventures. Visit often to receive updates about upcoming events and announcements, including our much-anticipated Hawaiian luau!

When is Assisted Living Appropriate?

Dealing with aging parents is a sensitive subject. You never thought the time would come when you would be faced with making decisions for your parents. It can be heartbreaking to recognize that strong, self-sufficient parents are no longer capable of taking care of themselves. You may feel guilty and ashamed that you do not have the sufficient time it takes to care for them yourself.

You want the best for your loved one, but you ask yourself “what is best?”

The follow checklist may help you determine when it is time to take action. Answering “Yes” to more than a few questions below, should prompt you to consider seeking assistance in helping you understand the many options that are available to you and your loved one.

Do you have an elderly loved one who:

Calls you several times a day for seemingly unimportant reasons.
Is afraid of being alone.
Has poor eating habits or is confused about when or what they have eaten.
Is confused by phone calls or simple instructions.
Forgets to take their medications or takes too many.
Has had recent falls or difficulty ambulating.
Refuses to go to a doctor but clearly needs medical attention.
Refuses to take showers and does not change their underclothes.
Can not take care of bills or finances.
Seems depressed or wants to stay in bed.
Will not give up driving but is in danger on the road.
Refuses help in the home or yard but can not keep up things themselves.
Acts normal and charming in front of others but is a different person when around you.
Cannot be reasoned with when discussing their care needs.
Has pushed you to feelings of resentment and guilt.

Taking action is the first step. The professional staff at Barton Creek Assisted Living may not have the answers to all of your concerns as a caregiver but we can offer our expertise and advise that may help you make correct decisions concerning your loved one.
